Seventh Edition of the \u201cEconomy and Society\u201d Award<\/b><\/p>\n
Father Paolo Benanti has been named the winner of the seventh edition of the International \u201cEconomy and Society\u201d Award, promoted by the Centesimus Annus Pro Pontifice Foundation, for his essay \u201cHuman in the Loop: Human Decisions and Artificial Intelligences\u201d. Alongside the main prize, two research fellowships were also granted: the first to Enrico Frosio, Ph.D. from the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan, for his studies on reinterpreting the present through the legacy of Benedictine monasticism; and the second to Father Raman Susha, Ph.D. from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas \u2013 Angelicum in Rome, for his research on designing meaning in the digital age, with mythodesign as a new challenge for contemporary missiology.<\/p>\n

Artificial intelligences now permeate many aspects of daily life: searching the internet, applying for a loan, looking for a job, or even meeting someone through an online platform all involve the action of various AI algorithms. These technologies, precisely because they operate in the background of our existence, have become almost invisible and largely unknown in their true nature. Making the operation of these pervasive tools visible and understandable\u2014and asking how to manage them without excluding human agency from decision-making\u2014is the central aim of this work. The book addresses the challenge of preserving humanity\u2019s capacity for control in an era when machines are increasingly able to replicate human decision-making. What can machines do without human oversight? What decisions can they make? How can we deal with the potentially harmful consequences of such delegation? Above all, how can we ensure that the human person remains at the center of those vital processes essential to the survival of our species and to peaceful social coexistence?<\/p>\n
